  • 500-1600   First Nations settlements from Late Middle Woodland Period to European contact.


  • 1673   Count Frontenac establishes French presence at Cataraqui..


  • 1758   The British capure Fort Frontenac.


  • 1783-1784   British acquire land from Mississaugas; survey the region; arrival of Loyalists,displaced by the American Revolution.


  • 1801   Kingston Market is established by charter..


  • 1812   War of 1812 sees much naval activity, construction of first Fort Henry and other defences, and increase in population.


  • 1821  First St Andrew's Presbyterian Church is constructed.


  • 1825  Second St George's built on present site (cathedral in 1862)


  • 1832   Construction of Fort Henry and the Rideau Canal; funds are granted to build the Kingston General Hospital (KGH).


  • 1833  Provincial Penitentiary is begun (now Kingston Penitentiary) .


  • 1838  Kingston is incorporated as a town .


  • 1841   Kingston is the capital of the United Province of Canada (Quebec and Ontario) until 1844; Parliament meets in KGH; Queen's University founded.


  • 1843   Construction of City Hall and St Mary's R.C. Cathedral.


  • 1846   Four Martello towers and the Market Battery are built..


  • 1856   Grand Trunk RR connects Kingston with Montreal and Toronto..


  • 1867   Canada's Confederation, John A. Macdonald first prime-minister.


  • 1917   The LaSalle Causeway replaces the old Cataraqui Bridge..


  • 1939   WW II brings industries to Kingston such as Alcan and Dupont.


  • 1952   Kingston extends boundaries to west and north.


  • 1976   The Sailing Olympics are held in Portsmouth harbour.


  • 1987   Last grain carrier unloads at Elevator Bay.


  • 1998   Amalgamation of the City of Kingston, Pittsburgh Township and Kingston Township.
